Polar Bear Plunge

Thank you to Red Lion's plunge team, Team Hardcore, for raising $1989.25.  The most we have raised as a team since the plunge started 5 years ago.  Also a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Rohrbaugh, Mrs. Barton, Mrs. Moser, Mrs. Dellinger and Mrs. Vasellas for helping with the event and a special thank you to Miss Reinert for once again leading the team risking hypothermia in the "balmy" 31degree water!  This was the coldest plunge yet!  Let's get ready for next year Red Lion!!!

Academic At Risk System

ACADEMIC AT RISK SYSTEM

In an effort to help all students meet with success, the Red Lion Area Senior High School has implemented an “Academic At Risk System”.  The purpose of the “Academic At Risk System” is to provide students with the support, opportunities and skills that are necessary to improve their grades.

HOW IT WORKS

The “Academic At Risk System” is based on a 15 day academic cycle.  During each 15 day cycle, teachers will conference with students who are achieving at or below a 64% in their respective classes.  During this conference, the student and teacher will discuss possible reasons why the student is not meeting with success and they will discuss strategies that will help the student be more successful.  The purpose of the teacher-student conference is to create an action plan that the student will follow with the goal of improving his/her overall grade in the class.  In addition to the student-teacher conference, teachers will also contact parents to share their concerns and discuss what strategies the student and parent can implement to help the student meet with success.
At the end of each 15 day cycle, teachers will complete an “Academic Referral” for every student they teach that has a 64% or below.  All teachers will have access to the list of students who received an academic referral, with the goal of having numerous adults in the building who can encourage and assist students who are working on improving their grades.  There is also an “Academic At Risk Team” that will monitor the students who received academic referrals.  This team will monitor which students may need extra support based on the number of referrals they receive or how often they appear on the Academic At Risk referral list.  The “Academic At Risk Team” will also review the data to look for trends that we would be able to address to improve our academic programs.

Digital Learning Day

On February 6, 2013, more than 20 teachers at Red Lion Area Senior High School joined teachers from across the district, and across the nation, as participants in “Digital Learning Day”.  The purpose of “Digital Learning Day” is to celebrate both educators and the opportunities to use technology to help strengthen student understanding in and outside of the classroom.  As I visited many of the classrooms participating in “Digital Learning Day”, it was great to see students actively engaged in learning.  Here are just a few pictures from some of the classrooms I had the opportunity to visit.

Students in Mrs. Keener's math class watch the whiteboard as it projects a student's answer that he is writing on the class Ipad.

Students in Mr. Hively's math class use a brainstorming tool, Wallwisher, to review for an upcoming test.

Mrs. Howard took control of the computers in her Web Page Design class so the students could take notes creating their own Web Page.
Mrs. Dennish had her students follow along as she read an article describing how some blockbuster movies don't always have their facts correct!
Mrs. Morris's students took advantage of the opportunity to use their own devices to help with their assignments in Business Management class.

Students in Mr. Marsala's English class worked together to create character maps from the novel they are reading in class.

Ms. Wingard's students were taking a classroom diagnostic test in Algebra I.

Mrs. Kelkis's Journalism students teach each other the tools they use on the computer to help produce the school newspaper, The Leonid.

Math Department News...

Technology in the Math Classroom!

Two exciting opportunities are happening in the math department this spring semester.  Technology is adding another interactive and engaging dimension to the way teachers teach and the way students learn.  Each teacher in the department will be provided with an iPad and projector.   This will provide the flexibility for teachers to walk around the room among their students while writing on the iPad and projecting  the writing to the front of the room.  Students will also  be given the opportunity to use the iPad and show how they arrived at a solution to a problem.  Teachers also have the ability to record their lessons and post them for students who were absent for a lesson.

A group of teachers from the math department are going to be piloting a program, ALEKS, that will provide remediation and support to students for the Keystone Exam, as well as classroom curriculum.  Staff development will be provided to the teachers.  Students will be scheduled based on the results of the winter Keystone Exam given this past December.  http://www.aleks.com/
