News from Social Studies...

As we get closer to November, the Social Studies department is gearing-up for the elections.  Several classes are working on fun election projects while the whole school is expected to get involved in the upcoming school-wide elections.
Ms. Axe’s classes are working on the campaigns of the presidential candidates as they have been “hired” by the candidates to shake things up.  They will be designing new slogans, writing plans to secure 270 of the 538 electoral votes, creating game plans for subgroups, making a crisis management plan, preparing for events, creating TV advertisements, and finally writing a speech for the day before the elections.  This effort will show the students what it might be like to get involved in a campaign.  Students will learn how exciting elections can be!
Additionally, the Social Studies department will be conducting a school-wide mock election.  Students will be called upon to create informative videos about the upcoming elections.  On the day of the elections, students will run the voting booths and even get involved with political campaigning.  We hope to wrap up the exciting election season with a visit to a local polling location.

PIN and the FAFSA

Are you a parent of senior?  Or, perhaps a junior, sophomore, or freshman?  Important information presented below regarding the FAFSA and FAFSA4caster....read on.

What is the purpose of the FAFSA4caster?
Free online tool to provide students with an early estimate of eligibility for financial student aid.  The site is meant for those not yet ready to apply for financial aid.
When student clicks on "Submit my FAFSA4caster now" the site instantly calculates estimated EFC (Estimated Financial Contribution) and sample award packages; however, nothing is actually sent to the federal processor.
Information from the FAFSA4caster will prepopulate on the FAFSA when the student goes online to complete the form as a senior, thereby saving time.
This site is recommended for students (with their parents) in middle school as well as high school juniors as a tool to provide early awareness of financial aid opportunities and educate students about the financial aid process.  It is NOT an official application and does not require a PIN.
FAFSA4caster is accessible at FederalStudentAid.ed.gov

What is a PIN used for?
The PIN is used to sign the FAFSA electronically, decreasing processing time.  Without a PIN, an applicant must print off a signature page and mail it, or sign a rejected SAR (Student Aid Report) once it's processed (approximately 3 weeks).
The PIN allows an applicant to sign the FAFSA and student loan master promissory note (MPS).  The PIN also provides access to an applicant's information on FAFSA on the Web, allows an applicant to view FAFSA processing results, to make corrections, to file a FAFSA based on previously completed data, and to view online information about federal student aid received.
Parent PIN allows a parent of a dependent student to sign the FAFSA electronically.
The PIN can be obtained at pin.ed.gov

Who needs a PIN?
The student applicant needs their own PIN and uses it as long as they are in school.
One parent of a dependent student needs a PIN and uses it for ALL children as long as they are in school.  If it's a single parent household, that's the parent who needs the PIN.  Otherwise, either parent is fine.
The PIN remains active for 18 months.  If unused, it will be disabled and use should call 1.800.433.3243 for reactivation.

The best time to apply for a PIN is shortly before completing the FAFSA online -- for those of you who are parents of seniors, we recommend that you begin this process now.  You may complete the FAFSA for the 2013-14 school year after January 1st.  By having the PIN number established now, you are able to submit your FAFSA much faster.

Foreign Language News

-
Fall is a busy time of year for the Foreign Language Department.    All of the languages are doing new and exciting activities.  The German classes at RLASH are excited to welcome four exchange students from Germany who will spend three weeks with host families in the Red Lion Area.  This is part of the Leinfelden-Echterdingen exchange program with York County.  Next summer 20 students from York County will travel to Germany.  While at Red Lion, the German students will attend school with their hosts four times, tour York County and surrounding areas, and spend time with their host families.  Red Lion German students will have an opportunity to meet and interview the German students in their native language.  Hosting exchange students this year are:  Gavin Murray, Graeme Nelson, Eric Soskin, and Kimberlyn Pennington.
Latin students are off to an excellent start this school year.  New Latin I students have been using their knowledge of English Grammar and Vocabulary to connect to their new language.  They will soon be involved in using technology to create “Derivative Trees” which explore the relationship of a Latin Root Word to their many English Derivatives.  Upper level students are continuing to investigate new grammatical structures and vocabulary terms.  Latin II students used their creativity to create review games, which they had the opportunity to share with their class and eventually other Latin I classes.  All are continuing to explore the many facets of Ancient Roman Culture and History and its influences on our modern American Society.  Carpe Diem!
In French class, November 1 will see the arrival of La Toussaint (All Soul’s Day).  The French do not celebrate Halloween but they decorate the graves of loved-ones with flowers and luminaries or lanterns.  November 5, La Fete de Saint Barbara marks the beginning of the Christmas season for the French.  The French also celebrate the harvest during this time.  In southern France especially, wheat is placed on the church altar.
November 1 marks the “Día de los Muertos” for many Spanish speaking countries.  Many classes will be creating and decorating their own skeletons to commemorate this day.  Classes will then vote for the most creative skeletons.  Some of the most creative skeletons in previous years have included ones with current apparel styles, boa skirts, a “Dumbledore” look alike, and a nerd.  Check out the skeletons from last year in Mrs. Repanshek‘s or Mrs. Ludwig’s rooms.  This is always a favorite activity.
