From the Math Department...

AP Calculus Wall of Fame
Every year around the first of Wednesday of May, the Advanced Placement Calculus test is given to students who would like to bypass an introductory calculus course and receive college credits as well. Students spend the year learning calculus concepts such as derivatives, integrals, and differential equations and go through an intensive review in the weeks leading up to the test. Every college requires a different minimum score on the test to receive credit – for example Penn State gives 4 credits in mathematics to students scoring a “4” or “5” on the AP Calculus test.
While college credits are nice, the goal of many AP Calculus students in Red Lion is to have their name forever placed on the “AP Calculus Wall of Fame” in room A206.  In order to have their name placed on the wall students must score a “5” on the AP Calculus test – the highest score possible. Every year approximately 250,000 students take the test nationally and only about 20% receive a “5” on the test.  Over the past few years AP Calc students who take the test at Red Lion have received a “5” about 65% of the time.
In fact the 2012 group did particularly well, with 23 students receiving a “5” out of the 30 students who took the test. New AP Calculus Wall of Fame inductees include: Jeff Adams, Harmony Austin, Colby Bennett, Galen Bush, Evan Bittner, Sunshine Colvin, Ben Doersom, Sam Fessman, Dalton Fishel, Julie Fuhrman, Jenni Golden, Ketih Golden, Emily Gross, Jenna Hammers, Dustin Innerst, Sam Keller, Ryan Kunselman, Katie Marvel, Calvin Nelson, Adam Poff, Matt Scott, Kristin Snyder, and Nate Weaver.
What’s in store for the calculus class of 2013? After a year of hard work this class hopes to add another long list of names to the AP Calculus Wall of Fame as well.

News from the Business Department...

Business Department Blog

This year like every year, the Business Department means Business!  We are off to a great start with some new changes as well as some of our old standbys. (With a little twist of course to help keep it real!)

School Store

Have you been to the new and improved school store yet this year?  Tell us what you think.  We are working hard to supply you will all your classroom needs as well as the attire you need to give you the Swag when you’re at the game!  The School Store is located in the cafeteria.  We are open before school, during lunch, as well as during special events.  Come take a look!

Accounting I
Is it a Debit?  Is it a Credit?  Now that we know how to analyze a transaction we are ready to record our business transactions in our very first accounting form—the journal!

Accounting II
Do you know what happens when a customer refuses to pay an accounts receivable? Accounting II students are learning how to write off those bad debts.

Alphabetic Speedwriting
In Alphabetic Speedwriting we are reviewing for our first Unit Test by playing Alphabetic BINGO. We will finish the unit by looking up lyrics to our favorite songs on the internet and transcribing the lyrics into alphabetic speedwriting.

More updates to come!

Business Management
We are working together in teams to create oral and visual presentations of a variety of topics learned to date.  Do you know the geometric shape of most levels of management?  Do you know which one of the five tasks is most difficult to perform as a manager?  Why?  Do you know why women and minorities often have to fight the glass ceiling principle?  To find answers to these questions, AND MORE…talk to any student in Business Management.
Computer Applications

After finishing our PowerPoint unit, we chose a persuasive topic to research and then create a 5-7 minute PowerPoint presentation that we will present to the class. We will use all the features taught in class in the culminating project. These features include, but are not limited to charts, tables, smartart, pictures, animations, transitions, and designs.  This is an awesome class!

Consumer Math
We spent the first week doing “basic” math review—trying to remember the basic elementary facts we had learned so long ago—way before calculators arrived in our lives. Then we progressed to what is involved in our daily lives—paychecks, hours worked, overtime, salary. We are working on figuring out weekly, biweekly, and monthly paychecks, as well as average hourly wages. So if you need help figuring out your paycheck, just ask one of the Consumer Math students.

Diversified Occupations
Have you been to Wendy’s lately?  How about Giant,  or Lion Pharmacy?  Did you take your dog to Petco for a grooming?  If you have been to any of these places you may have seen me, I am a Diversified Occupations Student and I’m getting ½ credit for going to work!  How cool is that?  It’s like getting paid to go to class!  (And I get to leave school early… everyday!)

Introduction to Business
We have been quite busy learning about basic needs and wants of individuals and how those items determine production in different economic systems throughout the world.  Learning about different systems is vital to understanding our fit (individual and country) in today’s global marketplace.

Marketing
The Marketing class has spent the first couple weeks of school learning what Marketing really is and how it is involved with our daily lives.  We are busy putting together projects dealing with Market Segmentation. Retailing is being discussed and how demographics, geographics, and psychographics are used in the decision of where and when to open retail stores.

Personal Law

Right? Wrong? How do we know who/what is right and who/what is wrong? Can we say one is right and one is wrong based on our own biases? People don’t always do what is considered right so laws were created to help society. Where did those laws come from? Who makes those laws? We have identified 5 sources of US law and narrowed down all rules/laws to three simple words: fair, safe, and respect.

Word Processing I

We have completed learning the keyboard by touch. We are able to key each letter by feel without looking at the keyboard and are now able to “feel” when we make a mistake instead of having to see the mistake first. That’s Pretty Cool!!! Now that we have the accuracy, it is time to work on increasing speed.

YES – Your Employability Skills
What color are you?  Blue, Green, Gold or Orange?  What type of job fits your personality color?  We have been studying the personality colors to help us answer these questions and many more.  We use personality colors every day in our lives, not just at work. Who are you going to call when you run out of gas.  Want to know the answer?  Ask a YES student!

P.S.  Don’t call your Gold friend unless you do it two weeks before you actually run out!  ;-)

Exploring Post Secondary Education Options:

PSAT Information.

Have you ever considered taking the PSAT's?  Here is some helpful information that will help you form your decision:

The PSAT provides you with the best preparation for the SAT Reasoning Test.  In addition, it is the entry point to compete for National Merit Scholarships including the National Achievement Program.  By taking the PSATs you are also able to gain personalized feedback on critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills, including suggestions for improvement on your SATs.

The PSAT is designed the same as the SAT with the exception of an essay assignment which does not appear on the PSAT.  The test lasts approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes.  The PSAT is your BEST PREPARATION for the SAT – but please know, it is only offered ONCE each school year.

We are administering the PSATs here at Red Lion Area SHS on Saturday, October 20th.  Again, this is the only testing date.  Cost for taking the PSATs is $22.  Registration for the PSATs is in the high school Guidance Office and you are able to pay for your registration by cash or check.  If paying by check, your check should be made payable to Red Lion Area School District.  Upon registering for the PSATs, you will be given a booklet to help with preparation for the test with sample questions and a link to the College Board website.

Again, the only testing date for PSATs for this year is Saturday, October 20th and the test will be administered here at Red Lion Area SHS.  Stop by the Guidance Office to register, with payment, at your earliest convenience.

Aviation Class

Did you happen to see a small yellow plane flying in circles over the bowling alley today?  If so, you weren't daydreaming!   Members of Mrs. Stone's Aviation class took their planes and helicopters outside to test how well they would fly.  Most of the planes and helicopters took off and landed without incident--however, if you happen to see a small yellow plane somewhere behind the bowling alley, please return it to Mrs. Stone!
