THE BELL HAS RUNG FOR 2011-2012

Labor day marks the unofficial end of summer and while this may bring a melancholy feeling to some, the energy has been restored to RLASH! On August 29, the senior high welcomed 1656 students through its doors and within minutes the halls were filled with students and teachers eager to begin a new year. The positive tone was set by the enthusiastic welcoming committee comprised of members from Red Lion's Student Council. Throughout the building, signs welcomed Lions back to a year that promises to be filled with a mix of honored traditions and some changes to better support our students.

One of the changes, or modifications, is to use the time set aside for faculty meetings to deliver concentrated professional development. This will require all members of the faculty to discern what needs to be discussed en mass and what info can be delivered through memos and emails. The time educators have to improve their teaching, thus improving learning, is precious and must be dedicated and preserved. To place importance on this limited time, a survey is currently being conducted to inventory the wants and needs of the faculty for professional development. The chosen selections will become the monthly themes to be supported within the departments and throughout the school. The goal is to create a systematic approach for the delivery of needed and requested professional development to assist everyone in achieving mastery of an instructional skill.

September's theme is connecting with students. Postive teacher-student relationships are the corner stone for learning and this topic will be explored through articles and dialogue. I look forward to highlighting many examples of a positive student foucsed learning environment.
