Does
your child have an Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) and is a junior or
senior? If so, you may want to encourage your child to apply for services from
the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (O.V.R.). This state-funded agency serves people who have disabilities
that present a substantial impediment to employment. Services are provided to help individuals prepare for, enter
into, engage in or retain employment.
Eligibility for services is determined once a completed application is
received by the York BVR office.
Ms. Sarah Gales is an OVR counselor from the York Office who visits Red
Lion Area Senior High School once a month to work with students who have
applied for, and are eligible for, services. She will also provide an interested student with information
and an application. OVR begins
working with students once they turn 18 years old, although a high school
student who is nearing her or his 18th birthday may also apply. Applications may be obtained from York
BVRS, 2550 Kingston Road, Suite 101, York,
PA, 17402, and phone: 717-771-4407
or 1-800-762-6306. A learning
support teacher can also provide your student with an application or a
brochure. Please remember that qualification
for special education services does not guarantee qualification for OVR
services, but interested learning support students should at least research it
and apply!
