Adult Education in Red Lion!

A wonderful opportunity has come to nine enthusiastic adult citizens of Red Lion!  They are learning how to "tickle the ivories" and make beautiful music!  Many of them had taken piano lessons when they were young and just wanted to refresh some "old" skills!  Others always wanted to play the piano and jumped right into a fun opportunity!  They meet twice a week for a total of 10 weeks with instructor Julie Beard, 6th grade teacher at LG and organist at Bethany UMC.  The musicians play familiar tunes with a variety of skills and improve their technique each week!  It is such a rewarding experience for students and teachers alike!

English Department News...

January English Students of the Month
All the way back in January, Ms. Suppa and Mrs. Yoder selected students who they deemed the “students of the month” in their respective English classes.  The English department would like to recognize these students for their amazing efforts in English class!

Ms. Suppa’s students of the month:

Peyton (grade 12): Peyton is an exceptional, hard-working student who always contributes in class with thoughtful comments and articulate papers.  This talented and ambitious senior plans on attending Kutztown University next year and majoring in Communications.

Brian (grade 12): Brian's wit and sense of humor are matched only by his expansive range of random facts. This year he has shared a few gems with us that I will treasure.  For example, guns did in fact exist during the Medieval Period and no, female peacocks are not called peacocks but peahens.  Brian and Peyton make class more interesting, and we will miss them very much next year.

Mrs. Yoder's students of the month:

Kaitlyn (grade 9): Kaitlyn is a model student in English class.  She has a great attitude and is always willing to participate in class discussions, lead small group activities, and give her best effort each day.

Dillon (grade 9): Dillon has been an outstanding student this year, earning a 100% for marking period 2 in English.  He often participates in class, assists other students in need, and always gives his best effort in and out of school.

Family and Consumer Sciences News...

In Healthy Cooking: We practiced cooking terms in the kitchens. Now, we are working on learning different substitutions to make recipes healthier.

In Advanced Culinary: We are learning about garnishing and how to make food more appealing. They had to practice garnishing with a grilled cheese. I had some creative students. :)

In Creative Crafts, students are learning how to knit and making mini scrap books.

In Clothing I, students are creating juice pouch totes and pajama pants.

In Clothing III, students are making photo pillows and custom quilts.

Students in Independent Clothing are involved with garment re-styling and making dresses.

Students in Child Care take the “Real Care” baby in its car seat home with them along with a diaper bag for a three night period.  The baby cries randomly and the students have to figure out what care is needed and perform that task: diapering, feeding, rocking or burping the baby.  Currently, students are also learning about pregnancy; prenatal care, fetal development, and diet.  They recently finished researching birth defects with each student presenting their project to the class via a power point presentation.
Students in the Day Care classes welcomed the preschoolers and their parents at a Meet and Greet in C107 this week.  Preschool starts Monday, March 25.  The 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds attend Monday through Thursday until the end of the school year.  Students in the two classes are responsible for planning and carrying out various activities with the children based on different themes each week.

In Housing and Home Furnishings, students have learned how to recognize different housing styles, components of a good floor plan and are currently designing their “dream home” floor plans.

Mrs. Dellinger’s Culinary Arts classes learned basic knife skills and practiced dicing celery, chopping onions, slicing potatoes, and cutting carrots into julienne strips to make vegetable soup.

In another lab, they reviewed various cooking terms by making chocolate whoopee pies.

Physical Education News...

TRX suspension training has made its debut in Physical Education class at Red Lion High School. Navy Seal, Randy Hetrick, developed the TRX. TRX is scalable to anyone's fitness level. Many professional athletes are turning to TRX as a way to deliver optimal results in less time than traditional programs.  NBA star Dahntay Jones of the Denver Nuggets and NFL quarterback Drew Brees rely on TRX training to develop total body strength, flexibility and power.

Students are also dancing their way to fitness this spring with Power Step Aerobics and other forms of modern dance.

Volleyball classes are perfecting the skill sets necessary to play competitive volleyball. A half an hour of competitive volleyball can burn over 200 calories.

Lion Bowl is the setting for bowling classes as they learn the set-up, approach and delivery needed to be a successful bowler.

Special Education News!

Does your child have an Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) and is a junior or senior? If so, you may want to encourage your child to apply for services from the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (O.V.R.).  This state-funded agency serves people who have disabilities that present a substantial impediment to employment.  Services are provided to help individuals prepare for, enter into, engage in or retain employment.  Eligibility for services is determined once a completed application is received by the York BVR office.  Ms. Sarah Gales is an OVR counselor from the York Office who visits Red Lion Area Senior High School once a month to work with students who have applied for, and are eligible for, services.  She will also provide an interested student with information and an application.  OVR begins working with students once they turn 18 years old, although a high school student who is nearing her or his 18th birthday may also apply.  Applications may be obtained from York BVRS, 2550 Kingston Road, Suite 101, York, PA, 17402, and phone:  717-771-4407 or 1-800-762-6306.  A learning support teacher can also provide your student with an application or a brochure.  Please remember that qualification for special education services does not guarantee qualification for OVR services, but interested learning support students should at least research it and apply!

Pennsylvania Career Guide

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry has announced the release of the 2012-13 Pennsylvania Career Guide.  The Pennsylvania Career Guide contains information about growing occupations, educational requirements, training opportunities and salary information.  The tools found in the guide will help students and parents make informed decisions about their goals and what is necessary to achieve them.

This year's Pennsylvania Career Guide highlights jobs in both the allied health and manufacturing industries, which both feature highly rewarding occupations.  The health care industry includes some of today's most highly sought after careers, and various allied health professions anticipate high levels of growth in the coming years.  Manufacturing industries are eager to train motivated people for the thousands of projected openings they have each year due to Pennsylvania's aging workforce.

The newest version of the Pennsylvania Career Guide has been posted online and is available on the publications page of Pennsylvania's Work Statistics website:
