Focusing on Amazing Students

This year the English Department will highlight four amazing students each month. Starting in October and continuing until the end of the year, two English teachers will choose two students who show effort, enthusiasm, stellar work, and or citizenship in their English classes.  Each month two different English teachers will choose students from their classes. These students will be honored in our monthly blog, and we will specifically recognize why they were chosen.  The students will also receive a certificate of recognition, and their English teachers will hang their pictures on the English bulletin board in the English wing.

The English department wants to make this year a celebration of the students who show their amazing skills in our classes each day. 

Look for our students of the month starting in October (below is a list of the teachers who will be featuring two of their students by month):

October: Mr. Marsala and Mr. Beatty

November: Mrs. Kelkis and Mrs. Mader

December: Mrs. Thiegs and Mrs. Mahan

January: Mrs. Yoder and Ms. Suppa

February: Ms. Gardinier and Mrs. Dennish

March: Mrs. Wolfe and Miss Bollinger

April: Mrs. Masser, Mrs. Ayala, and Mrs. Shultz

May: Students will be chosen from English electives

June: English Superstars (the top English students of the year and students receiving English awards for the year). 

The Voice of the Lion's says........

The Voice of the Lion's has been very busy so far this fall and here is an update from each of your fall varsity sports. Keep supporting all your Lion sports teams!

Boys Varsity Golf

 8/29 at South Hills Golf Club (Southwestern's home course)

Red Lion placed 3rd behind Central (1st) and Dallastown (2nd).  Brandon Stine placed 2nd overall with a 75; Freshman Kevin Crumbling shot a 78; Senior Mike Renga shot 85; Sophomore Dylan Reichard shot 86; and Freshman Ian Schaeffer shot 92. 

Sept. 6^th – Lions Golf team placed 1st match at Pleasant Valley with a team score of 398.  Senior Brandon Stine won the tournament shooting a 1 over par 71.  Mike Renga and James Caskey both carded 81’s and freshman Kevin Crumbling posted an 82.  Sophomore Dylan Reichard shot a personal best 83.  The Lions are now in a tie with Dallastown for 2nd place in Division 1.

Boys and Girls Varsity Cross Country

Aug. 6^th - The Cross Country team traveled to Northeastern last evening to take on Central, New Oxford and the Bobcats.  It was a hot day to race but the boys took care of business by notching wins against all three competitors.  The girls ran strong, but came up short against rival central.  The girls had wins against New Oxford and Northeastern. 

Individually, Caleb Gatchell set a new course record with a time of  17:11. Nick McCabe, Nate Pardoe and Josh Pordoe were all top ten. Amanda Wivell took 3^rd Naomi Scharf was 5^th and Julia Kendrick, Rachel Jenks and Clare Kocman were all top twelve.

Girls Varsity Field Hockey

Aug. 31^st – defeated Red Land 4 – 0 Ali Posey recorded a hat-trick and Paige Taylor added the other goal.

Sept. 4^th – Lost to Dallastown 1 – 0 in Overtime.

Sept. 6^th - Lion Field Hockey defeated New Oxford 4 – 0. Ali Posey had another hat-trick and Olivia Uberti also had a goal.

Boys Varsity Soccer

Sept. 4^th - Lost to Southwestern in OT 2-1. Matt Carazo scored on an assist from Dan Jones

Girls Varsity Soccer

Sept. 8^th – defeated Spring Grove with 5:14 remaining in the second overtime period on a goal by Sam Andel

 Varsity Football

Aug. 31^st - Lost to Cumberland Valley 44-10

Sept. 7^th - Lost to Manheim Twp. 42-7

What's Happening in Science!

Although the weather is still hot as we begin the new school year, there is excitement in the Science Dept.  The science teachers have worked to get students active into the process of learning science as quickly as possible.  Over the first few days there has been a bevy of activity highlighted in this list:

Chemistry students checking out a "black box" to identify what is inside

- Physics students examining Roadrunner cartoons to see if they obey the laws of physics

- General Science students using chromatography to help solve a “kidnapping”

- Biology students using Mentos and Coca-Cola to learn about the scientific method

- Chemistry students complete mini-labs to gain an idea of the topics they will be completing throughout the school year

- Biology students using microscopes and cameras to study hydra

- General Science students making elephant toothpaste - look it up!

- Biology students working to demonstrate the 7 characteristics of life and make a PowerPoint

- Physics students examining the laws of physics at different stations

- Biology students studying the characteristics of life to figure out what is alive and what’s not

- Chemistry students using cornstarch and water to make silly putty while studying the scientific method

- Biology students answering what makes something living

- Engineering Principles compete in mini-competitions to get the feel for the Engineering Design Process and to determine their best lab partner.

- Biology students writing for the future

- Physics students using slinkys to study waves

Aviation Students perfecting their Flyers!

The science department is committed to having students “do” science all year long but hopefully this shows that we are off to a good start.

   

Welcome to the 2012-2013 School Year!

 

Whether this is your freshman year, your senior year or your 30^th year at Red Lion Area Senior High School, a new school year is an exciting time of year.  It is impossible to predict what the year has in store for our students, faculty, staff, parents and community members, but the possibilities are endless!  One way to make sure this year is your best year ever is to remember that you are not alone—we are all part of a community and we can help each other succeed!  Here are some examples of ways you can take advantage of the school community to make this year the best year yet!

CONNECT WITH YOUR PEERS!  Get the name, phone number and email address of a couple of people in each of your classes.  If you have a question about what you did in class, what you should be doing for homework or what you should be studying, getting in touch with your peers is one way to either keep you on track or get you back on track.

CONNECT WITH THE STAFF!  Get to know the adults in the buildings—they can be a great resource.  Once your school year begins, you will realize that you often see the same people, students, faculty and staff members, on a daily basis.  It is important to realize that everyone who works in the school building chose to work in a school building because they enjoy being around students.  Take the time to say “Hi” and get to know the people you see on a daily basis.  If you ever have a problem or a concern, talk with an adult in the building.  If they don’t know the answer to your question, they can guide you in the right direction to get your question answered!

GET INVOLVED!  One way to make sure you don’t feel like you are going through high school alone is to get involved!  There are countless activities to get involved with, including athletics, student government, the musical, and a variety of clubs!  Club sign ups will be happening shortly, so make sure you sign up for something that interests you!  If you can’t find a club that interests you, think about creating your own!

BE CONNECTED!  A great way to stay informed regarding what is happening at Red Lion Area Senior High School is to be connected!  Follow the Twitter feed of the senior high school --@rlashs.  Pay attention to the morning announcements (you can always watch them online if you missed them)!  Let your parents know about upcoming events—9^th Grade Orientation (8/20), Back to School Night (9/13), Parent Conferences (11/19 in the evening, 11/20 in the afternoon, 1/30 in the evening and 2/1 in the afternoon) and continue to follow this blog!
