News from the Family and Consumer Science Department...

At the Senior Awards Ceremony held on May 21, 2013, The York County Association of Family and Consumer Science Award was presented to Lauren E and the Family and Consumer Science Department Award was presented to Gabrielle D.  Both Lauren and Gabby were chosen for the awards based on their outstanding academic achievement, character and leadership in class.  We congratulate them on their graduation from Red Lion and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Social Studies News...

 

We here in the Social Studies department are hard at work preparing for finals and the end of the year.  For four of our students, the end of this year has brought an exciting field trip as a result of winning the Constitution Literacy Competition.  On May  3, 2013, the four winners of Red Lion’s first annual Constitution Literacy Competition took their tour of Washington D.C..  Aurora L, Lucas C, Nick K, and William C were accompanied by Mr. Bull, and Mr. and Mrs. Maris. The winners got a tour of the inside of the Capital where they got to see the chambers and sit in the gallery.    The Social Studies department looks forward to seeing who will win the second annual CLC, and we would like to wish everyone good luck on their finals.

News from the Foreign Language Department...

 

Students in the French, German, Latin and Spanish classes have been busy preparing themselves for their upcoming annual field trip to Washington D.C.  French 3 and 4 classes as well as Spanish 3 and 4 classes have been diligently studying the artists of their respective countries to glean some information about the culture of the country and the impact of these artists on the world. 

French 3 students choose an individual painter and prepare a written paper as well as an oral presentation, done in French, at the National Gallery of Art.  The French 4 students act as observers and evaluators of their peers.  This year, students have studied Matisse, Monet, and Van Gogh.                          

Spanish 3 students have worked in groups studying the lives of 6 Spanish artists including El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Picasso, Dalí and Miró.  This year, for the first time, their presentations were done on Google presentations, making the artwork much more available and visible for their classmates.  While in the gallery, students will have a chance to see works of these artists and also see the artwork of those artists who influenced these famous Spaniards. 

The Latin 4 students will be visiting the gallery to note the influence of Rome and Roman mythology on many artists. This year, all of the artwork viewed by the students is done by Italian artists.  They will be asked to observe these influences on both paintings and sculptures currently on exhibit in the gallery.

The German 4 students will have the opportunity to visit the Holocaust museum as part of their study of Germany and its culture.  They will take a guided tour of the museum and note the impact of the holocaust.  As part of the German 4 curriculum, students have studied the existence of a resistance movement called the White Rose.  They will look for evidence of this group in the museum and observe all of the signs and written materials in German.

This field trip is certainly one of the highlights of the study of Foreign Language for our students.  Students return with a more global perspective of art and its influence on culture in general.  Many times, they return with their first glimpses of American artwork also.

News from the Special Education Department

 

Senior year is almost over for the class of 2013!  It is such a season of great excitement for both students and their parents, as memorable endings and new beginnings occur one after another. If your child is a member of the class of 2013, has had an IEP, and received learning support services throughout his/her educational career, you may be wondering how your child’s learning differences will affect his future plans.  The educational rights that are found in an Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) end when your daughter or son graduates and a NOREP (Notice of Recommended Educational Placement) is signed, exiting her or him from the program.   Whether your child directly enters the work force or pursues more training or education, some of the accommodations and modifications which helped your child succeed in school can also help your child find success in future endeavors.  There will be a HUGE difference, however, your daughter or son will now be totally responsible for advocating for herself / himself.  You can help advise your child, but you cannot talk to anyone at either a job or a school.  However, your child is not being sent out into a void.  Red Lion Area Senior High School will be providing your child with a document entitled “Senior Summary of Performance,” which will briefly detail the accommodations and modifications she received in school, along with suggestions that may help her succeed in the post-high school world.  This guide has been prepared with input from your student, and should assist him in asking for the change(s) he would need an employer or educator to make in order to “level the playing field” so that he could have an equal opportunity to succeed.  Additionally,  if your child qualifies for services from OVR (Office of Vocational Rehabilitation – see prior blog post) a counselor might assist your child with this process. 

Mock Accident Demonstration

The Red Cross Club at the Senior High conducted its 7^th Annual Mock Accident Demonstration on Friday, April 26^th, for the senior class.  The purpose of the demonstration was done to remind seniors about the dangers and effects of drinking and driving, especially during the Prom season.  Emergency service providers from York Area Regional Police, Red Lion Fire Department, Red Lion Ambulance, Dallastown Fire Department, Yoe Ambulance, York Hospital Medic 97, York Hospital Trauma Services, and Stat Medevac 13 along with the local businesses of Baker’s Garage and Miller’s Excavating volunteered their time at no cost to the district for this demonstration to occur.  The high school Red Cross Club appreciates the understanding, cooperation, and support of everyone involved as it educated our senior class and worked to promote a Safe and Alcohol Free Prom.

News from the Music Department...

I am pleased to officially announce for the second year in a row the Red Lion Area School District and Community has been named by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) as a "Best Community in Music Education" for 2013.  Attached to this email is the press release and two promotional graphics celebrating our district as a "Best Community in Music Education."

Austin T.

Austin consistently earns very high grades in English. He is talented at writing and has an extensive vocabulary. More importantly, he is a thinker. He always takes the reading further and incorporates his own thoughts and views, whether they be philosophical, historical, or religious, to make the learning his own. He has a hunger for learning and always offers the class a new perspective. Mrs. Ayala says, “One of the best things about being Austin's teacher is that he challenges me and my thinking in new ways. He has caused me to look at literature that I have taught for many years differently. His potential in life is endless.”

Rachel is one of the most attentive students who is energized to learn. She is a critical thinker and shares her unique ideas with the class. She has a good work ethic and is a leader when working in groups.

Therefore, her work ethic and positive attitude help her to overcome challenges and to be a leader among her peers.”

Olivia has earned student of the month because she is a vocal participant, an interested reader, and one who makes continual progress in the program.   Olivia is 15 years old.  Her favorite book is Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson.   She enjoys competitive color guard, and she loves to draw.   She most looks forward to spending time with her boyfriend, Wyatt this summer.

Brandon is a helper in class on a daily basis.   He achieves high grades, and is willing to work with others who might be struggling with one of the many skills we study in class.  Brandon is 15 years old.  His favorite book is Black Diamond, by Patricia McKissack.   He enjoys playing baseball and hanging out with Joe Giusto, his secretary of defense.  Brandon is looking forward to having more time to read books this summer. 

 

News from Technology Education...

Here is an example of the Level 3 Electronics project. This is a digital electronics trainer along with it’s schematic diagram. Students build the entire project from scratch including making their own circuit boards.

On Tuesday evening, April 23rd, Sophomore Lucas Crumbling received an award from ASM International South Central PA Chapter (Material Science Engineers) for his science fair project in which he sought to recreate the first photographic technique.  Lucas was one of only nine other students in the York, Lancaster, and Harrisburg areas to receive this recognition!

On Thursday evening, April 25th, Senior Emily Zelger will receive an outstanding high school chemistry student award from the South Central PA Section of the American Chemical Society.

Math Moodle

The Math Department is creating a Moodle website for next year's Geometry students.  The Moodle website can be used in a variety of ways.  It is a great method to share lesson plans, worksheets, and activities between teachers.  With new textbooks next year, Geometry students will only have a text book to use in class.  The Moodle will act as an at-home resource for homework and additional examples and practice. It will also be used as a resource to students who are absent.  By uploading worksheets, notes, and recordings of lessons (Educreations or Screencast-o-Matic) the students will have access to everything they have missed.  The Moodle is also a great way to keep parents involved.  We can post upcoming quizzes, tests, and large assignments in the calendar for everyone to see.  For some teachers, it will either supplement or replace the use of www.edmodo.com.

Constitutional Literacy Competition

In an effort to promote literacy in the U.S. Constitution and engagement in American government, the Red Lion Area Senior High School Social Studies Department facilitated the first 1^st annual Constitutional Literacy Competition on Saturday, April 13.  Organized by Mr. Matt Maris, Mr. Garrett Bull, Mr. Jay Vasellas, and Ms. Megan J. Axe, the CLC sought to promote Constitutional literacy among young men and women, and foster a lifelong interest in the principles and practices of American government.  Twelve teams competed for a trip to Washington DC by demonstrating a comprehensive understanding in the principles and practices of American government.  The competition consisted of four rounds and 220 questions.  The atmosphere in the auditorium was electric with the crowd of parents, family, and friends actively following along with each question. At the end of the competition Zach S, Jon R, Corwin S, and Jack F were finalists while Aurora L, Lucas C, Nick K, and William C were crowned Constitutional Scholars. 

The CLC Committee would like to extend special thanks to our many friends who supported us in the organizing of this competition.  Special thanks to the RLASHS social studies department, Dr. Scott Deisley, Mr. Mark Shue, Mr. Brian Raab, Mr. Grant Gouker, and Mrs. Katharine Diorio for their continued support.  Special thanks to Representative Scott Perry for sponsoring the DC trip and Senator Robert Casey for providing pocket-sized Constitutions.  The CLC Committee looks forward to continuing this tradition in the spring of 2014.

HACC York Campus

Guidance Parent Night

On Wednesday, April 17th from 7-8 pm, the high school Guidance Office will be hosting a parent seminar on the EdPlanner/CollegeBoard college search.  This seminar is open to all parents, but pre-registration is required.

If you wish to attend and learn how to utilize free links on college searches, provided by CollegeBoard, we welcome you to attend.  This hour-long seminar will be jammed-packed with information to help you streamline your child's college searches, how to prepare for college visitations and much, much more.

York Arts Chalk Walk

Many of the NAHS members participated in the York Arts Chalk Walk held at the York Galleria Saturday April 13, 2013. There were enough members to create two murals.  The students spent time together creating their ideas and refining them.  Then took the designs to the Galleria can created the murals on large canvases using dry pastels.  Everyone had a great time and earned NAHS service hours.

Music Department News...

The Red Lion Area Senior High School Music Department is extremely busy this Spring as most music departments tend to be!

The first concert of the Spring season is the Concert & Madrigal Choirs along with the Mixed Chorus. The concert will take place on Saturday evening, May 4 at 7:30 PM in the high school auditorium. Admission is $3 for the concert. The concert will feature music from pop/Broadway style to early American  (Aaron Copland) to modern day music (Eric Whitacre). Along with recognizing the senior members and handing out numerous awards, the Concert Choir will also be moving to the songs of The Lion King. They are currently rehearsing Monday evenings in preparation for this particular choreographed selection. Lastly, we will be premiering a musical composition by one of our own graduates, Miss Rebecca Gildea. Rebecca graduated in 2008 from Red Lion high school and pursued a music degree for four years. The piece Rebecca has written is titled “The Ships Are Made Ready In Silence” and will be premiered and conducted by Miss Gildea. This is a tremendous opportunity to see and hear the tremendous achievements of one of Red Lion’s own alumni.

The Madrigal Choir will be performing a free concert on Tuesday night, May 7^th at 7 PM in the high school auditorium. They will be performing their entire medieval show that evening.

The Orchestra and Concert Band will perform their Spring Concert on Friday, May 10 at 7 PM. Tickets for this event is $3 as well. This Weekend of Music will conclude with the Symphonic, Jazz and Stage Bands on Saturday, May 11^th at 7 PM. Again the admission is $3. Here both the String and Instrumental programs will honor their senior members and hand out numerous awards to students who have excelled in our program.

On Thursday evening, May 23^rd, we will be inducting numerous Junior class members into the Modern Music Masters Honor Society. This is an international honor society that honors music students who excel in academics, music, leadership and character traits.

Also included in our busy Spring schedule are two elementary tours. The Show Choir will be touring our district on Tuesday, April 30^th, and the Jazz Band touring on Thursday, May 2^nd.  These same two groups will be performing at “Felton Days” on Saturday, May 11^th during the morning hours.

To close out a very busy Spring season, the Concert Choir will be performing at Baccalaureate on Thursday, June 6^th. The Symphonic Band and senior members of the Concert Choir will be performing at Commencement on Friday, June 7^th.

ASVAB Testing:

The Guidance Office is offering students in grades 10, 11, and 12, a free opportunity to take the ASVAB Career Exploration Test on Thursday, April 25th at 8 am, here at the high school.

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program can assist you in taking steps towards finding a career that is right for you.  You can benefit from the program, whether you plan to pursue further education or enter the workforce.

The program is designed to help you:
•    learn more about yourself and the world of work
•    explore occupations in line with your interests and skills
•    develop an effective strategy to realize your career goals

To sign-up for the ASVAB, stop in the guidance office no later than Friday, April 19th, and register.

Business Department News...

Here’s what’s happening in the Business Department these days.

Congratulations to the following HACC Academy Automotive Students; James A, Ben D, Mitch M, Brandon R, and Craig Z.  The students recently passed their station inspection test!  Now it’s on to the emissions testing.  By the end of the year they will all be licensed to emissions test and inspect your car!  Anybody need their car inspected?

Personal Law

Students who have taken Personal Law during their time at RL and who are 18 years old have an awesome opportunity on May 16. We will visit the State Correctional Institute in Camp Hill. Students will begin the day by signing in to the prison and accepting full responsibility to comply with all institutional rules. Students are amongst the inmates as they perform daily tasks whether it is lunch time, yard time, gym time, etc. This trip allows students to see what type of environment, routine, expectations, etc. are present in a state correctional facility compared to a county prison.  Judging from previous visits, this is an invaluable opportunity for each student to see what it is actually like inside the state prison system.

Introduction to Business

Intro students will soon begin their practical simulation -- Mean Jeans.

Management

Students have been doing jigsaw activities and applying historical practices to present day business situations.  For example, the Hawthorne Studies with the Marriott Corporation and Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to "If I were a CEO, I would...to move my employees from one level to the next for higher productivity and greater profitability."

Consumer Math

Students will soon be starting a 6 week simulation on Financial Management.

Students are getting ready for their Marketing Fair to be held on Wednesday, May 22.
